What Slack is

What it reads

Slack is where your team already works. Connecting it gives your assistant somewhere to post what you ask it to post, and it asks which channel every time, because choosing the channel is choosing who reads it.

Where it posts

Any public channel in the workspace you installed it in, and any private one you invite the app into. It asks which channel each time.

What goes in a post

Whatever your assistant just worked out from your other accounts: last week's sales, a lead count, the chats nobody picked up.

What it never touches

The messages people write. It can list channel names so it can ask you where to post, and that is all it sees of your Slack.

Frequently asked

Can my assistant read our Slack messages?

No. The app may post messages and list channels so it can ask you which one to use. It does not read what people write in them.

Why is a channel missing from the list?

It is private and the app has not been invited. Slack hides private channels from any app that is not in them. Type /invite @HeyMetra in that channel and ask again.

Can it post a report every Monday on its own?

HeyMetra does not keep a schedule itself. If your assistant runs a scheduled task, a post from it goes straight to the channel without waiting for you.

Can I approve each message before it is posted?

Yes. Edit the Slack connection and switch on Ask before sending. Every post then waits on a card that shows the exact text and the channel by name, and nothing is posted until you approve it.

What if a message goes to the wrong channel?

It stays there, and it cannot be unsent by us or by Slack. Name the channel yourself, or switch on Ask before sending to check each one first.

Setting it up 4 steps. You sign in on the provider, so no password reaches us.

One install covers the whole workspace. The step people skip is the private channels: public ones work straight away, but a private channel only appears once you invite the HeyMetra app into it.

    Install the HeyMetra app in your Slack workspace

    On the Connections screen choose Slack. Slack shows you what the app may do (post messages, and list channels so it can ask you which one), and you approve it there. You are back in HeyMetra when it is done.

    One install covers the whole workspace. You do not connect Slack again per channel, and there is nothing to choose here.

    Invite the app to any PRIVATE channel you want to use

    Public channels need nothing: the app can post to them without joining. A private channel is different: type /invite @HeyMetra in it. Until you do, HeyMetra cannot see that the channel exists, so it will not be offered.

    This is the step people skip and then wonder why a channel is missing from the list. If a private channel is not offered, it has not been invited.

    Ask for something to be sent, and name the channel

    Say what you want posted. Your assistant asks which channel and posts it. To approve each message first, edit the connection and switch on Ask before sending: every post then waits on a card showing the exact text and channel. It posts what you asked for, when you ask.

    The send button beside the connection posts a fixed test message, so you can confirm delivery works without composing anything.

Four things go wrong with Slack, and the most common one is a private channel the app was never invited to. The rest are an assistant that has not caught up with a recent change, a message posted in the wrong place, and an app someone removed.

A channel you use every day is not in the list.
It is private, and the HeyMetra app has not been invited to it. Slack does not reveal private channels an app is not in.
Open that channel and type /invite @HeyMetra, then ask again.
Your assistant says it cannot choose a channel, or posts nothing at all.
Some assistants remember what HeyMetra could do from when they first connected, and do not notice that it has changed.
Start a new conversation in your assistant so it picks up what HeyMetra can do now.
A message went to the wrong channel.
Your assistant posts to the channel it was given. A channel name that came from the conversation rather than from you can be the wrong one.
Name the channel yourself, or switch on Ask before sending so every post shows its channel before it goes. HeyMetra cannot unsend a Slack message afterwards, and neither can Slack.
The app was removed from Slack and sends now fail.
Uninstalling the app in Slack revokes the token HeyMetra holds. The connection remains on the Connections screen and stops working.
Connect Slack again from the Connections screen. The same channels become available as soon as the install is back.
