HeyMetra vs Metabase
BI over a database you already have, versus questions over the accounts you already run.
What Metabase is built for
Metabase is an open-source BI tool that sits on top of databases and warehouses. You point it at your data, then explore it with a query builder or SQL, save questions and assemble dashboards. It is self-hostable, which for some teams is the deciding feature.
Side by side
| HeyMetra | Metabase | |
|---|---|---|
| What it connects to | SaaS accounts directly — ad platforms, analytics, ecommerce, CRM | Databases and warehouses |
| Getting ad platform data in | Authorise the account | A pipeline has to load it into the database first |
| Asking a question | Plain language | Query builder, or SQL for anything it cannot express |
| Who tends to operate it | The person with the question | Someone who knows the schema |
| Can it change your accounts | Yes, behind an approval gate | No — it queries and visualises |
| Hosting | Hosted by us | Self-host or their cloud |
| Where it is strongest | Cross-account questions about live marketing and revenue data | Deep, repeatable analysis of data you already model |
Compared against Metabase’s own description of what it does, checked July 2026. No prices or feature counts here — those move, and a stale number in our favour would be worse than none.
Which should you pick?
Pick Metabase if your data already lives in a database and the questions need real modelling, joins or SQL — that is what it is for. Pick HeyMetra when the data lives in SaaS accounts, the question is in plain language, and you would rather not stand up a pipeline and a schema to answer it.
When Metabase is the better choice
Metabase is the better choice when self-hosting is a requirement, when analysts need SQL, when the questions span internal product data rather than marketing accounts, or when you already run a warehouse. It is a mature BI tool and we are not trying to be one.
Frequently asked
Can HeyMetra query my own database?
Not today. It connects to SaaS accounts — ad platforms, analytics, ecommerce and CRM tools — rather than to a database you host. If your questions are about internal product data in Postgres, a BI tool over that database is the right shape.
Can Metabase read my Google Ads account?
Not directly. Metabase connects to databases and warehouses, so ad platform data reaches it through a pipeline that loads it first. That pipeline is a real piece of infrastructure to run, and skipping it is much of the difference here.
Do I need SQL for either?
Metabase has a no-code query builder and SQL for whatever it cannot express, so SQL shows up eventually. HeyMetra has no query language at all — you ask in plain language and the answer arrives with the figures it used. HeyMetra is pre-launch: integrations are being switched on one at a time and the only way in today is the waitlist.
